Manipulating Colour

The focus on our course at the moment is colour and colour trends. In groups we had to pick a colour scheme; from this we had to select a specific colour palette. My group started with neutrals then chose to focus on dusky pinks and greys, as we thought this was a much more modern interpretation on a colour scheme where most would think of beiges and nudes.

In the seminar today we used Photoshop to manipulate the colours of an image to suit our colour scheme. Here are some of the functions I used to alter the colours. Afterwards I focused on using just the luminosity tool to explore my whole colour palette rather than just focus on achieving one colour like I did for the first lot of samples.

As I have experience in Photoshop I finished the tasks fairly quickly so moved on to take images from Pinterest and altered the colours on these paint splatters using the selective colour tool.

Pinterest has been a large part of our course so far and a great way to begin to organise our thoughts and ideas for the projects.  I'd really recommend checking it out if you haven't already! You can find my Pinterest here.

University Haul

Dinner Set: IKEA, Bedding: Happy Friday at BHS, Mugs & Towels: Asda, Bath Mat: Matalan, Tea Towels: Morrisons, Pans: Aldi

I've been dying to blog about all the lovely new things I bought for living at university. I was definitely one of those people that came over prepared. Aside from all the basics you see above, I was that person who brought a measuring jug, scales, mixing bowls - and I haven't even baked yet!

Everyone told me not to buy anything 'too nice' for uni because it was inevitably going to end up broke or stolen. I'll admit my bedding is stained with UV paint and I've already broke my first glass, but I'm a sensible girl, with lovely flat mates, and I want pretty things dammit! It was nice to buy things that reflected my style rather than sticking with the boring white crockery and cream towels that I'm used to at home.

A little tip I've picked up is to only keep one of everything in the kitchen and store the rest in your room. This encourages you to wash up, and prevents you breaking your dishes as you play jenga with the precariously stacked pile.

Other items I'd highly recommend bringing which not everyone thinks to include are a clothes maiden (save on drying costs!), and extension lead, a whiteboard (for to-do lists or schedules), mattress protector/topper, a door stop and lots of lovely storage boxes to make your room look a bit more organised.

Beyond The High Street | Nottingham

With the madness of Freshers Week over and a whole day to myself, my flatmate Beth and I decided to explore the Nottingham that lays beyond the Corner House and Victoria Centre. We spent most of the day in Hockley which from what I can gather is the Northern Quarter (Manchester) of Nottingham, home to an array of vintage shops, independent cafes and cool bars.

VINTAGE SHOPS:
Braderie and Wild Clothing are two vintage shops worth checking out! The selection of women's apparel in Wild Clothing is particularly impressive and the prices are much friendlier than good old COW Vintage.

MUSIC AND GOOD READS:
If music and books are more your thing then head to Rough Trade - the only one outside of London. They stock CD's, vinyls, books, gifts and a small selection of magazines, as well as holding events and signings. Can't find the magazine you want at Rough Trade? Ideas on Paper is where you need to be. Hidden away in Cobden Chambers, this place is a magazine lovers dream. The walls are covered floor to ceiling with magazines, from independent issues to the well known, quality magazines such as Oh Comely, Dazed and Confused and Wonderland. The guy who runs it is really friendly and would happily offer some great suggestions if you ever wanted to read something new.

NIGHTLIFE:
In the evening I headed to a few bars with another one of my flat mates. Our first stop was Coco Tang; hidden behind a small doorway, I would've missed this place if it wasn't for the two bouncers outside. The room is dark and the music is loud(ish) making a nice mix between bar and club. You can sit down with one of their retro sweets inspired cocktails (I'd highly recommend the Parma Violets) or you can hit the light up dance floor.
Afterwards we headed to The Lacehouse, entering on what seemed to be a salsa night. It goes without saying that we were beyond confused to see couples shimmying and spinning around the pub. I predict on a normal night that place would be perfect for quiet drinks with friends. We ended our night at Wax Bar on Broad Street, a small cocktail bar with an older crowed, and the only place wanting to let us in after 1am!

It was nice to venture further than the main high street and support some of the smaller businesses in Nottingham. I can't wait to explore even further; if you have any suggestions of places I should go then leave a comment below!
